Netgear DG834 firewall/router

RJK

Anyone know how the hell to set up one of these ?
....or how to tweak Windows XP Home ed. to make use of the damned thing ?
http://www.netgear.com/products/details/DG834.php

We "installed" it, rather, using DHCP it seems to have configured/sdjusted
itself to the BT adsl signal, and it's just sat there doing nothing. i.e.
the "install" wizard has made the correct PPPoa vpi 0 and something else 38
settings etc.

Do we have to make LAN connection of some sort ? We seem to have made XP
recognize a new upnp device - not sure whether we should have done that.

If anyone could throw me a hyperlink to a page that explains what needs to
be done in XP Home, regarding creating and/or tweaking a LAN connection etc.
it would be most helpful.

At the moment IE6 just displays a white page saying "Page cannot be
displayed."

p.s. we're not even sure that we have the correct BT login name, ....stored
in the modem ? ...is it ?

regards, Richard

Thanks Jan, am very grateful, I'll store that one away for future reference
as well.

It turns out that when the BT adsl service was upgraded at my friends
address a while ago, BT (British Telecom) changed her login and password,
somehow without telling her - she claims. (it's more likely that she had
problems connecting and a BT techie hand-held her through some
over-the-phone fault finding). Leaves me wondering how she ever got
connected with her "standard / 1 PC" adsl modem, perhaps those details were
injected into her system from the BT ISP end ! BT seems to never do
anything in a standard way, and their syntax seems to deviate from what
other ISP's use.

After using IE6 to communicate with the router, and filling in the correct
login / user account name and password, all the DNS slots, (dynamically
allocated DNS etc), filled up and away it went !

thanks again

regards, Richard

You're very welcome! I'm very glad to hear you were able to resolve your
problem. Good job!

I have a Netgear WGT624, and I know they can be a bit confusing for those
who are not that familiar with the details of the setup. The BT sounds a
lot like Cox Cable were I lived in San Diego, and Verizon here in Virginia
where I live now. The dears do mean well.... <g>

Thank you very much for posting back and letting us know what worked for
you, and for the benefit of other readers who might have a similar problem.

I too have Natgear WGT624 v3. I am having trouble connecting to World of
warcraft game for longer than 30 seconds. I have all the software and
firmware upgrades on my pc and Went to netgear.com and they said there is a
problem with XP pro SP2 and some security features. My normal web browsing
and messengers stay online fine until i play the game. Previously I just ran
straight from my DSL modem with no problems. I also have a MAC networked
(with my WGT624) and have no problem staying connected. Any patches or lil
secrets to get this to work?

There are actually two better places to ask. This is a Microsoft Internet
Explorer forum; which is pretty useless for discussing Netgear products on
an AT&T Yahoo! HSI (ADSL) connection.

You should also consider how you are expressing your problem. It isn't very
clear to me; are you losing the DSL connection? Or is it just the game
server connection that is dropping.
