Router Question?

P

Paul Woodsford

My setup is as follows.
2 PC LAN via a Netgear DG834 ADSL Modem Router, latest firmware..
Both PC's running XPHome SP2 updated, both have UPnP enabled.
Both PC's connect to the LAN and see each other and it works well. Both PC's
connect to the WWW and there are no problems there. Both PC's can log on to
the Router Setup.

PC1 has a Netgear Icon in Network Places and an icon labeled "Internet
Connection" in the folder Network Connections. From this icon I can enable
an icon to show in the Taskbar to enable/disable the internet gatway
connection.

PC2 has NONE of the above.

How can I enable the Taskbar Icon to enable/disable the WWW connection from
PC2????

Ant help much appreciated.

On PC2:

1. Go to Control Panel | Add or Remove Programs | Add/Remove Windows
Components | Networking Services, and add these components if they're
missing: Internet Gateway Device Discovery and Control Client, UPnP
User Interface.

2. Run "services.msc" and make sure that these services are running:
SSDP Discovery Service, Universal Plug and Play Device Host.

3. Disable and then enable the LAN connection.

Thanks Steve.

Although the Windows Software Components were installed, the 2 Services were
"Disabled".
On setting them to Automatic and Starting them, Hey Presto everything is as
it should be.
Thanks again.

Steve,
I have the same problem except that I am using Windows XP Pro
SP2 updated on both PCs connected to a D-Link DSL-504T DSL Router. I
can see a Internet Gateway on PC1 in Network Connection & My Network
Places but not on PC2.
I did as what you recommended to Paul on PC2. However, I am
still not seeing Internet Gateway icon on either Network Connection
nor My Network Places on PC2.
Pls advise what else should I try.
TIA

In my experience, it can be hard to get the Internet Gateway icon to
appear, even when everything looks like it's set up right.

Disable and then enable the LAN connection on PC2. If that doesn't
make the icon appear, stop and then start the SSDP Discovery Service
and the Universal Plug and Play Device Host service.
