=========

And here is a problem that I am having. I can "capture" from a MiniDV
CassetteDeck using Adobe Premiere 6.0, and have access to all the AP6.0
stuff.

BUT I also have the Matrox Video Tools software, which came bundled with the
Matrox RT2500, and it has a LOT more stuff available.

BUT the Matrox stuff won't work because: Win2K keeps classifying my MiniDV
Cassette Deck as an "Imaging Device" in the "Device Manager", and Matrox
requires that the MiniDV Cassette Deck be classified as "Sound, video and
game controllers".

And so solve this problem, the Matrox RT2500 User's Guide says to do the
following:

=======
Problem: DV Device shows up as "Imaging device". Windows "Device Manager"
may recognize your DV device as an "Imaging device".

Solution: You'll have to remove your DV device as an "Imaging device" and
re-install the drivers.

To re-install the device driver in Windows 2000:
1. Turn on your DV-1394 device.
2. Right-click on "My Computer".
3. Select "Manage".
4. Select "Device Manager".
5. Click the plus sign beside "Imaging devices".
6. Right-click "Microsoft DV Camera and VCR".
7. A message will appear about uninstalling the device, click "OK".
8. Choose "Action" > "Scan for hardware changes".
9. The "Found New Hardware Wizard" starts. Click "Next".
10. Select "Search for a suitable driver for my device (recommended)", click
"Next".
11. Under "Optional search locations" make sure nothing is selected and
click "Next".
12. Windows will automatically find the "c:winnt\inf\dvcam.inf" driver file.
Click "Next".
13. Click "Yes" to continue.
14. The "Found New Hardware Wizard" dialog box will appear. You how have the
proper driver installed. Click "Finish" to exit.
15. Your DV device should now be listed under "Sound, video and game
controllers" in your "Device manager".

Seems simple enough, right? Wrong... Everything up to Number 8 works as
shown. From Number 9 on there is not any of the choices shown. The Wizard
goes ahead and installs the MiniDV Cassette Deck back into "Imaging devices"
in "Device Manager" just like it was before!

Am I missing something?

Any ideas? Any input would be genuinely appreciated.

Hope that this finds you all doing well.

Try this.

Go into Control Panel
Select Add/Remove Hardware Device
Select Uninstall a Device

Search for the MiniDV Device. If it doesn't show up, go ahead and
Select "Show hidden devices"

Search for the MiniDV again. If it is there, uninstall it. Make sure there
isn't more than one instance of it in there.

Pick up with Step 8. See if that works for you.

Hey Joe, you doing alright today? Thanks for the input. I'll give what you
suggest a try, and get back to you. OK?

Hope you are doing well.

James C. Allison:
Hey Joe, you doing alright this morning?

Well, I tried what you suggested, and no matter what I did, the Add Harware
Wizard went ahead and installed the 1394 Cassette Deck back in "Imaging
devices".

And I did this in addition on another try:

I did a search and found the file: "Dvcam.inf" (which is the driver that
Matrox says will install the 1394 Cassette Deck in "Sounds, video, and game
controllers" in Device Manager) in the System folder in Win2K. So I copied
it to a 1.44 Diskette in Drive A:

I then uninstalled the 1394 device, and THEN went back and told the "Add
Hardware Wizard" to install it. When it prompted for a driver, I told it to
look in Drive A:.

THEN the Wizard gave me a window that said that it had ALREADY found a
suitable driver, and went ahead and put the 1394 device back in "Imaging
devices" in "Device Manager".

So let me ask you this: There is a window that lets one choose the
manufacturer of the device. The problem is that there is NOT listed "JVC"
(who is the manufacturer of the HR-DVS2U). The item on the list that the Add
Hardware Wizard chooses is "generic". So the question is: Is there a way
that THAT list of manufacturers can be updated to include JVC?

Just a thought there.

James,

At this point I would say contact the JVC tech support and see if they can
resolve
the issue.

Sorry I can't fix the problem.

Hey Joe, you alright today?

Alright, I guess the next step is the JVC tech support. BUT thanks for
taking a shot at it. would you believe that all the Matrox discussions
groups are totally void of any one at all? Seems like the Matrox stuff all
turned out to be turkeys. I've been in a number of NGs with the DTV people,
and they ALL are commiserating with me over my having gotten Matrox stuff.
And Matrox doesn't even HAVE anyone to even talk to about RT2500 issues any
more.

And to show how fast the technology is progressing, when I first got all
this stuff four years ago, it was in the thousands of dollars. And NOW, an
IEEE 1394 card that will do most of what an RT2500 card will do costs less
then $20.00!!!

Isn't alien technology just wonderful? :)

Hope this finds you doing well.
