need help with windows updates and msn not working

I have been trying to work with my daughter on a problem
she has with her computer since sundayover the phone. Not
easy to do this way.
Problem is that when she tries to go to MSN and check her
email it say sorry we cannot sign in because the user or
password is not correct. Tried my user and password and
it would not work on her computer either.
Also when you try to run windows updates it goes to the
page and says your current security setting will not
allow you to run active x controls on this page without
problems or something along that line. When you click ok
it says admin only and will not let her go any further.
She is the only user on this computer and it has xp home
on it. Tried changing the security info in internet
explorer also stopped all programs running in task
manager that we could also stopped firwall and still
cannot get to msn or windows updates.

fixed the msn problem by doing the following
.. Click Start, then Run, and enter the following:
regsvr32 softpub.dll
then click OK
update is still not working but will have to work on it
later.
