Need Help with In the First Degree

I have an old game that I wanted to try to play. In the 1st Degree, it is
a 2 cd multi-platform (windows 95 and mac). These are the orginal game disks
I purchased in 1995.

The problem is that when I put the disk in the CD drive it won't install.
When I check the properties it appears that the disk is blank. When I try to
use Run from the start menu I get a format error that states "Windows cannot
read from this disk. The disk might be corrupted, or it could be using a
format that is not compatible with windows".
I have already updated all the drivers, and I cleaned the disk. My CD drive
works fine with all my other cd's. I tried to run in compatibility, however
it read the disk either. I don't think that the disk is corrupted, because a
friend could run it on his mac.

Any help would be great.

Hi Ron,

Are you able to browse that CD using My Computer?
If not, and you have more than one CD drive installed,
you may need to insert that CD into the other drive.

Thanks for responding.
No. I cannot browse the CD using My computer. I do not have another CD
drive on my computer, however I did try to install this game in my laptop
that also uses XP and had the same result. I also tried using Nero to see if
it could find any files on the CD. According to Nero, the installation disk
has one track 01:0:02.00 71:40.36 (630MB) Macintosh HFS (mode1). I also
tried using an ISO viewer and it listed all the game files, but there was no
way to access them. Again, according to the game it is multi platform. The
orginal instruction book gives install steps for Windows 3.1, Windows 95 and
Macintosh.

Hi Ron,

I'm beginning to suspect that although it's a multi-platform packaged
game, they might have shipped each platform on seperate media...

If you believe this is not the case, then you should be able to locate
the Windows installation files on the Mac computer, and transfer
them to your PC by emailing them. It will take a lot of patience..

Hi Ron,

Another approach if the previous suggestion seems tedious .. ;-)

When a game is a DOS game, it could work using compatibility mode:
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=292533 or by using the Multiboot
bootdisk from: http://members.ozemail.com.au/~lpcd/downloads.html
and always check at fileplanet.com to see if there's a patch available.

With DOSBOX you can emulate a DOS computer on your XP desktop:
http://dosbox.sourceforge.net/information.php Or try MS Virtual PC:
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/virtualpc/downloads/trial.asp
which allows you to install DOS or to run any operating system inside XP.

If you prefer to explore other advanced methods, here are two excellent
tutorials I've found on the subject: http://www.dosgames.com/faq.php and
http://home.earthlink.net/~angeldancer27/XpGameList.htm For sound
issues use: http://sourceforge.net/projects/vdmsound Good Luck! :)

Hi richy rock,

If you could post a new thread for your issue and include the
name of the game, it will help you to get more responses. :)

I have been able to get the game to run in 256 colors by manual changing the
capatiibility to Windows 2000. Yet the options are invisible. I can click
on Witnesses, Documents, Go to Trial, but the submenu is invisible. I have
Windows XP, either the game is just not compatible with XP, or there is
something I need to change so the submenus are visible. Also, has anyone
gotten a 1st degree conviction? I remember a few years (and several
computers) ago I got a 2nd degree conviction.

Hi there! I have managed to install this game, and I can "play" it in Windows compatibility mode. Unfortunately, it seems as though the windows cursor doesn't change to the game cursor, and my submenu has also disappeared. Were you able to fix it ? Does any one know how to fix it ?
