Need help setting up multiboot with Win 95

Kevin J. Nielsen

I am sorry if this question doesnt belong here.

I created a 540 MB FAT partition at the beginning of hard drive 0. I
use Bootit NG. I am trying to install windows 95 on this partition but I
keep getting the errors "insufficient memory to initialize windows" and
"while intializing IOS Windows protection error." I added the lines
MaxPhysPage=30000, MinFileCache=51200 and MaxFileCache=56320 to my
system.ini file and that stopped the memory error only to be replaced by the
IOS error. I turned off the L2 cache to stop the IOS error and then I
received the error "insufficient memory to initialize windows" again.

I have an Asus K8V mb and an AMD Athlon 64 3200+ 2 GHz with 1.5 GB ram

It sounds like the AMDK62upd.exe fix could fix this problem if I could
only start windows but it wont even start in safe mode. Does anyone know
what I can do to get Win 95 to start?

Thank You

Kevin

Best to ask in a Win98 newsgroup. Even better to upgrade to Win98.

I don't believe Win95 will run on an Athlon 2GHz CPU, [Win98 will]

As the others have told you, it may not be possible to run Win95 on your
hardware. A better solution is to install Virtual PC 2004 (free) or
VMWare (free) and create a virtual machine for Win95. Then you don't
need to dual-boot and the hardware needed for Win95 will be emulated.

Thank You for that information, I will try it.

Yeah I'll second that - ALOT easier in a virtual machine.

I received a solution to my problem. I was able to apply the AMDK6upd patch
without having to start Windows 95 and that solved my problem; Windows 95
now starts up and runs fine. Excellent!!

Kevin

(e-mail address removed) sent me the following fix from the
microsoft.public.win95.setup newsgroup

Extract the files from AMDK6upd.exe to a bootable floppy disk by
executing
'AMDK6upd.exe /T:a:\ /C'. (Note: The switches are documented by
'AMDK6upd.exe /?').

Start Windows 95 installation following the normal procedure.

When the error occurs (usually on the first boot into Windows 95), or
the
computer fails to start Windows 95, boot machine using the bootable
floppy
created in Step 2.

Manually copy the updated driver files on the diskette to their proper
locations as indicated below:
NOTE
The Copy to This Location paths below assume that Windows 95 is being
installed in the default location (logical drive C). If installing
Windows
95 on a different logical drive, modify the paths accordingly.

File Name Copy to This Location
scsiport.pdr C:\Windows\System\IOSubsys
disktsd.vxd C:\Windows\System\IOSubsys
esdi_506.pdr C:\Windows\System\IOSubsys
hsflop.pdr C:\Windows\System\IOSubsys
cdfs.vxd C:\Windows\System\IOSubsys
vfbackup.vxd C:\Windows\System\VMM32
ios.vxd C:\Windows\System\VMM32
int13.vxd C:\Windows\System\VMM32
NOTE: The following file is needed only if the version of Windows 95
is
OSR2.1 or OSR2.5:
ntkern.vxd C:\Windows\System\VMM32

Remove the floppy disk and restart the system.

If prompted, select Normal Startup of Windows 95.

Complete Windows 95 installation procedure.

After Windows 95 is fully installed and running, execute the
AMDK6upd.exe
without any command switches to register the update.
