Must use win 95?

R

Roger Van Loon

I now have a Dell dimension PC with Windows XP professional. When I
try to use some of my CD-roms (chess programs etc.) I get the error
message "Must be run under Windows 95."
Is there a solution for this? Or must I go back to Win 95?

Right click the program icon
Click Properties
Click Compatibility tab.
Make selections from there.
You may have to try different combinations for the older programs to work
and then they still may not work.
In that case contact the manufacturer and/or get a newer version.

Have you tried a web site of one of the games to see if there is an
upgrade?

Roger ...
Try right clicking on the program icon. Select PROPERTIES and click on the compatibility tab. See if Run under Windows 95 is an option. If it is, click it and try again ... Good Luck,

Thanks, all. Very useful info. I'm now trying it out.
However, with one of the CD-roms (Chessmaster 4000 turbo), which I
like very much, I had no luck so far - not even after using the
compatibility options.
And looking on the web for a solution or an update, (as was also
suggested), I found that this seems to be a known problem. As I found
on one site:
""
The program installed with error 'DXSETUP.EXE-Entry Point Not Found.
The procedure entry point SUnMapLS_IP_EBP_12 could not be located in
the dynamic link library KERNEL32.dll.' Trying to run the program
after installation resulted in error 'CM4000.EXE-Application Error The
application failed to initialize properly (0xc00000005). Click on OK
to terminate the application.'
""
Exactly the error messages that I'm getting.
Any sugestion would be appreciated.

Roger.

Hi,

Try support for the application from the program vendor - some require a
patch or updated file set. Some simply will_not_work, as they rely on older
file versions or protocols that no longer exist. For those, I would suggest
that you look into a "virtual machine". This software will allow you to
emulate a Win95 environment, and the software that you choose to use in it
will be none the wiser. You are required to possess a copy of the desired
operating system to install into the virtual machine.

You're talking a ten year old program. Best to use an older PC for such.

I guess I will have to look up a "virtual machine" then

All Programs - Accessories - Program Compatibility wizard. Browse to
the exe file, and say 'run in mode for Win95'

There are other options like installing Win95 on another partition and duel
boot. You could take this one step further by using removable drives in
drive bays as I have done. I have a backup drive with XP installed that I
find much easier to go to in an emergency. Drive bay setup is very
inexpensive and saves much time and stress if you have difficulties.
