My mouse disappears

I'm using a wireless optical Microsoft mouse with Windows XP on a Dell
Dimension 4500. Today it started just disappearing - still appeared to be
functioning if I happened to be in right location and clicked it, but would
never show. At first, I could get it functional by rebooting but now it
boots and is invisible. I tried to use a connected usb mouse that came with
computer, but it functioned identically. I've check setup in mouse program,
but see nothing. I'm hoping this is just a setting somewhere, but I don't
know where to go. If anyone cane help, would greatly appreciate it - I feel
like I'm back in DOS-Land, having to do everything with the curser keys and
it is a real pain!

Go to the Control Panel\Mouse
click the Pointer Option, be sure the pointer
speed is about the middle.
Also go to the Control Panel\Keyboard
set the repeat Delay slightly above middle, same
with Cursor blink rate.
You will have problems if you put any of the above
at highest, except Repeat Rate.
