My Monitor is Listed 3 Times in Device Manager

I bought another tower awhile back and kept the same monitor I used with the
last tower...HP Pavilion MX75. When I click on Monitor in Device Manager, I
see that it's listed 3 times. Also when I click on Display Adapters, I see
that my adapter is listed twice. I don't think I know how to correct this so
that it shows only one monitor and only one device adapter. I've tried to
correct it and I thought I was doing it the right way but when I restart the
computer, the monitor still shows the same 3 monitors and the same 2 display
adapters. Would someone be able to provide step-by-step instructions for me
so that I can correct this once and for all?

It's probably not a problem. The extra entries are most likely DIMMED,
right? That means they're old and not currently being used. You could
highlight the dimmed item and right-click it, choose Uninstall to get rid
of it.

The 2 display adapters might be legit; are they the exact same name, or is
one called "secondary"? The secondary one is the other video output on a
dual output card, common today; leave it alone. If they are identical,
and one is dimmed, you can get rid of the dimmed one as above.

the display adapters are identical. You know what I did was I disabled one
of the adapters. I disabled 2 of the monitors. When I disabled the
monitors, one of them went away (the one that showed Microsoft as the
manufacturer) and 2 remained with one disabled. I get the feeling this was
somehow duplicated from being used on the previous tower. Does that make
sense? Oh and by the way, I haven't experienced any problems since I
disabled the monitor and adapter.

I would go into safe mode and uninstall them all (there may be more than
what you see in Normal Mode). Reboot and load the graphics card drivers
from the graphic card's CD when prompted by the add hardware balloon. XP
should recognize and provide the drivers for the monitor.
