My DVD drive isn't working, I can't think why?!

I just tried to play a DVD on my laptop, but my nothing happened; I looked on
device manager, and on my DVD (_NEC DVD+-RW ND-6500A) drive there is a round
yellow dot with an exclamation mark on it.
I've tried updating the driver in every different way possible, but all I
get is this message- "Windows successfully loaded the device driver for this
hardware but cannot find the hardware device. (Code 41)".
I cannot rollback the driver as I have nothing to roll back to.
I have also tried Windows Update, but there are no update drivers for me to
install.
I have tried everything on the troubleshooter, but it still doesn't work, it
always worked before, I can't work this one out!

Hi SwearingLittleNad,

See if the information in this MSKB article helps you to resolve the problem:

CD-ROM access is missing and messages cite error Code 31, Code 32, Code 19,
Code 39, or Code 41 after you remove Easy CD Creator in Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314060/en-us
(please note that although the article references Easy CD Creator, there are
other third-party software packages that will cause the same "problem" to
occur).

If you don't want to manually edit the registry, you can d/load and run the
registry patch that is available here:
http://aumha.org/win5/a/xpcd.php#problems
(look at the second "problem")

Hey Patti, thanks so much for advice, really appreciate it; it worked!
Um, just one small problem though, now when I play dvds on Windows Media
Player there is no sound.
I've been on control Panel, device manager, troubleshooter checked all my
installed sound controllers, everything is working fine, but no sound on the
Media Player, which is wierd cause I don't seem to be having a problem with
my music??
DVDs also seem to be playing fine on Power Cinema, have I lost some kind of
connection via reinstalling my dvd drive hardware perhaps?
Whoops :-\

Within Windows Media Player, go to Tools>Options>Devices tab. Click on
Speakers then Properties. In the Sound Playback section, ensure that the
proper device is selected in the "Audio device to use" field.

Sorry, tried that, still doesn't work?! Tried every different volume speaker
and sound effect thing I could think of, nothing works.

Guess the problem would have to be with Media Player as everything else is
working fine.

Hi Miss Patti, I got a problem with my driver; my dvd/cd rom is not working.
When I checked it, it says 'Windows cannot start this hardware device because
its configuration information (in the registry) is incomplete or damaged.
(Code 19)'. Can you help me with the problem pls?

Also try the following. You should back up the registry before making
changes:

Click Start, Run, type Regedit, click OK.
Locate this Registry Key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class
Key Name: {4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}
Value Data: [Delete All Value Data from UpperFilters and LowerFilters]
Note: Do not delete the Key or the Multi-String Values. Delete only the
data values.
Exit Registry and Reboot
