When I select Start | My Documents it ALWAYS opens with Search Assistance
showing in the left column.
How do I get it to open with Folders showing?

I've tried the folder options business and selecting Apply this view to all
folders.-No Help.
Can't find anything on MS site. (what else is new!)
XP Pro SP2

I just spent 30 minutes searching the registry hoping to find a value there
to change.

Thanks

Right Click on My Document icon>Properties>and change the target folder
location in the target box to:-
Documents and Settings\User\My Documents >ok

or,simply click the Restore Default button >ok

Once in the folder, go to View/Explorer Bar: Uncheck Search and check
Folder.

I tried that too. Search is not checked when I initially open My Docs. I can
get Folders to show, but it won't remember it. The next time I open My Docs
up, it opens with Search Assist showing again.

Any other suggestions?

Where is this at in the registry that it makes the determination? I've been
all over it and can't find it.

Thanks

BTW--I just uninstalled SP2 and that didn't help either.

This might occur due to incorrect or missing "Attributes" value here:
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{450D8FBA-AD25-11D0-98A8-0800361B1103}\ShellFolder

Click Start, Run and type this command:

regsvr32 /i shell32

If that does not help, what are the options you see when you right-click My
Documents link in Start Menu?

Just checked, that value is there.

Slight error on my part. Actually what's showing is what you get when you
just CLOSE the folders pane. It's a blue pane with the control boxes:
'Files and Folder Tasks'
'Other Places'
'Details'

I ran regsvr32 /i shell32 with no help.
It still won't remember to open the folders view.

As a side note, something that might be related, I have Adobe Photoshop CS
installed. At File | Open, that window always comes up with the Thumbnails
view showing. Photoshop 7 and all other programs have the Tiles view
selected. Can't get that one fixed either. Don't know if they are related
problems or not.

Any thing else I can try?

Thanks a lot.

Does it happen when you double-click a folder?
What are the options you see when you r-click the My Documents link in Start
Menu?

If I double click a folder, it opens the folder in the rt pane, leaving the
left pane as is--which is with:
'Files and Folder Tasks'
'Other Places'
'Details'
as showing.

Rt click on My Docs on Start menu has the following:
Open
Explore
Search
Scan with Norton
Copy
Show on Desktop
Rename
Properties

I just checked on two other XP machines and it's doing the same thing, so I
don't guess there's a way to get it to 'remember' from the Start menu unless
there is a registry hack.

Thanks

FYI for everyone and thanks for the help.

Got it figured out!
Went to Folder Options| File Types and set the default action to Explore for
Folder.

Thanks all.

Glad you got this fixed. But the feedback was poor from you.
