Windows Explorer Search is not looking for my search words

Windows XP Pro, SP2, Second Edition.

I had Windows Explorer open, doing a search for a particular Word document.
I had used three or four methods to search in a large folder (*.doc) (by
date -I knew the specific date) (word(s) within the document), etc. There
was no other application open, because I was just getting ready to start a
new project.

No search was done, but each attempt returned an immediate "File not found."

In services, Indexing is set to Manual, but it apparently didn't start. Is
there ever an instance when it should be on automatic?

I have often seen Indexing Service in the Task Manager. Today, I don't see
it.

The only major change I have made in the last two weeks is successfully
installing a renewal subscription for Internet Security Suite (CA). It
successfully completed the reindexing of all my mail files immediately
following the first major scan of all drives. All of this was done very
smoothly.

Where should I start?

Here is how to reset your indexing
http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/outlook/HA102378321033.aspx

If you have enough CPU >Pentium 4 2.5Ghz
and SATA drives in it
I highly suggest Windows Search 4.0
(The Search 3.0 Sucked for XP)
In fact in many ways I like Search 4.0 better than the search in Win7

If after you've downloaded it and indexed
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/products/winfamily/desktopsearch/choose/windowssearch4.mspx
You find out that it's slowing your PC down to a crawl
Just uninstall it
:(

With WinSearch 4.0 do you have to insert file extension entries into
the Registry for "other" text-like files, as one does for the basic XP
search.

eg to enable text searches in .pas (Delphi) files one enters . . .

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.pas\PersistentHandler]
@="{5e941d80-bf96-11cd-b579-08002b30bfeb}"

.. . . or is some other action needed, or does WinSearch 4.0 use the
same entries.

I've been on Win7 so long I forget
But I think you can Add and customize what types of files it searches

Boasting will get you no-where <gg>

Or is it that time flies when you're having fun ?

Well I've been using Win7 since Beta
and it's been a while since I've been asked for an issue like this.
(If I had remote access to his computer I could see)

I don't think it's boasting... I just don't like to say things I'm not sure
of
And I "THINK" you can customize what it searches for..

However I do know I like the Search abilities of Search 4.0
Sorry I just don't like to say "For Sure" when I can't remember and don't
have access to a XP Box.
*Yes I could Remote into a Clients PC but I don't like to do that un
announced Laugh!

Between Feb 7 and Feb 12, my computer corrected the Indexing on its own. I
didn't see any reason on my machine that the Indexing would have stopped.
FWIW, I used that new Window Search when it first came out, and it was a
failure as far as I was concerned. It must have been the first one you
mention. But I had already been stung.
I will keep your URL in case I need it. Thanks.
