"My Docs" not appearing in lists

When I start up Explorer I can see the "My Documents" in the list.
However, when I use a program like an installer, which also shows a list
for you to choose where to put your new file/program, usually the "My
Documents" folder isn't there. What is causing this, and how would I get
it to show up as it does with normal Explorer?. Thanks.
