Multimedia keyboard functionality loss

Upon the install of the XP security upgrades for April, the Keyboard
Properties page becomes devoid of its "BUTTON" tab and therefore significant
functionality. Restoration brings back the tab but removes the upgrades.
What's the problem?

I am having the same problem with my HP keyboard. A long instant-message
with HP support failed to solve the problem.
