Mulit-users and printer sharing

For some reason, other users on my computer cannot access the printer {HP
psc2175v all-in-one}. I have the printer setting marked as 'share this
printer', but nothing. Now, this is not a LAN issue......I am not networked
with any other outside computer. This is pertaining to other user accounts on
my machine. I'm not sure what more to do to enable the sharing feature. Help?

Hi:
HP All-in-One has a lot of problems.
I'm one of those who have been struggling with this issue.

You can see very clear picture on this problem, if you read many of posts
regarding HP printers on this board.

At least, you're NOT only one.

Is this XP Home or XP Pro?

Is a Norton or Symantec application installed on the PC in question?

Cari,

I am one of those users that began having trouble with the All-in-one
software about 2 months ago. What I observed is that if you are a computer
administrator, printing works fine. If you don't have full administrative
rights on the computer, the job gets stuck in the queue.

Reading through the many posts about this issue, I tried to resolve it with
all the fixes, spending about a weeks worth of time. Finally, began from
scratch reinstalling the operating system, minimum of thinkpad drivers, SP2,
no firewall, no applications and the print driver only for an HP OfficeJet
7310 on the LAN. It's a fairly new printer purchased at the end of November,
2005.

With this clean installation, the jobs get stuck in the queue. I believe
it's a faulty driver caused by Service Pack 2. If you would me to send you
the Event Viewer logs that I saved along the way, let me know. Also, if you
can't help, please let me know who to contact.

In the Control Panel, click on Printers & Faxes. Right click on the Printer
and select Properties. In the Advanced tab, set it to print direct to
printer instead of using the spooler. Does it now work for all users?

This appears to be an issue with the printer being on a network and the
print job having to negotiate its way though the firewall. Is it on a
network... if so, is it attached to another PC or a print server?

The OfficeJet 7310 has a built in LAN connection and I gave it a static IP
address. The computer gets it's address from the router and is on the same
subnet as the printer. I can ping the printer from the computer.

As I've noted here before:

Our HP all in one came with its 'Security' /'Permissions' settings set for
Administrators and Power Users only. Our pc had no power users group, and
so only administrators could use the printer.

What compounded the problem is that XP has 'simple file sharing' enabled,
and this hides the 'Security' tabs on all Properties sheets, so you can read
references to 'permissions' but can't see where the hell they are!

The setting is well hidden at the bottom of the 'view' section of the
'folder options' under Tools in Windows Explorer. Untick the box and add
'users' to the groups allowed to use the printer via the 'security' sheet
you will then find under 'properties' for the HP.

Unfortunately, even though 'users' will now be able to use the printer
functions after this, you will still probably have to turn the printer on
and off between users when using 'fast user switching', as the HP does not
seem to understand this.

Did you ever get your issue resolved? I had given up for a couple months and
just started researching again tonight. I ran across this solution at
http://www.mcse.ms/archive63-2006-5-2331331.html and it fixed my problem. :)

The answer is to change from a DNS name to an IP Address in the Port Settings.

So, as an Admin account, Go To Control Panel.

Printers and Fax's
Right-Click - Properties on your Printer.
Ports Tab
Find the port your printer is using
Click on Configure Port
Change "Printer Name or IP Address" to the IP Address of the Printer.

Click OK.
Click Close

Login to the Limited Account and try again.
