MSN nickname - impossible to change it?

Is it possible to change an MSN nickname? I mean *really* change it... not just
make it appear to be changed via the tools>options method using the MSN client.

I don't use MSN messenger, I use Adium on Mac and GAIM on linux.

I have read plenty of posts re-iterating the MSN Messenger Tools>Options method
of changing the name. THIS DOES NOT WORK!!! All this does is change the nickname
locally so that ONLY if you are using the MSN Messenger client, it will change
the name when you connect. I can prove this because if you connect to the MSN
network with a non-MSN Messenger client such as Adium of GAIM, the old MSN nick
is retained.

So, is any way to *actually* change the MSN displayed nick? Or is the old name
permanent?

I meant Adium OR GAIM here. Not "of".
