MSCONFIG

Been clearing up a badly infected PC (P4 1.8 running XP Home)

I've disbaled a large number of startup items shown in MSCONFIG, some which
are shown as hyroglyphics (square boxes etc). I'd like to remove these
elements permanantly. I've downloaded a free program - StartupCPL (Startup
Contol panel) to assist me in deleting, but when run doesn't show anything
that I want to delete.

For example, I've startup items showns as sequence of square boxes
interspersed which odd chars. The location is:-

HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Windows:Run (or
Windows:Load). Checking Current User location in registry thr windows:run
(i'm assuming the :run refers to data field called run on RH Pane), shows
nothing. How do I get rid of these ????

There are others whose location is simply shown as:-

Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run

Where do I find this in registrty to delete ???

There are also some others whose location are simply shown as "common
Startup" or just "startup". I've checked windows and program files but can't
seem to see anything. Where are these. ??

Thanks in anticipation

The disabled items are placed here (including the "Load" entry):
[HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Shared Tools\MSConfig\startupreg]

Kelly has a neat little program called "Clear Disabled Items From MSconfig
Start Up" located at http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm. It is
located at line 148 on the right side. This might be what you need.

Ramesh,

Thanks for your reply.

Just so that I'm clear.......I've run meconfig which has opened up the
system configuration window. The Startup tab displays both checked and
unchecked items
It take this to mean enabled (checked) and disabled (unchecked) items (?).

Running regedit and opening up the location you indicated displays a list of
folder. This list is thus both enabled and disabled items shown by msconfig
(?). I take it that by indentifying the disabled (unchecked) item, I can
delete the corresponding registry entry (?). Running msconfig again would
not shows these deleted entries.

Cajunswabbie,

Thanks for this. Downloaded and ran. Excellent.

All responses have been great. Downloads will be included on USB pocket
drive for use elswhere and I've made a note of registry location for future
reference.

Thanks everybody.

Yes, you're correct.

Let me explain again. The enabled/checked items might be present in any of these locations in the registry:

[HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run]
[HKCU\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run]
-and-
[HKCU\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Windows]
In the right-pane, the value named Run and Load
(REG_SZ Run can be set to launch an application at startup, say "calc.exe")

Hint: Expand the "Location" column in the Startup tab to know the exact location of the command.

The disabled (unchecked) entries are present in any of the locations:
[HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Shared Tools\MSConfig\startupreg]
[HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\SharedTools\MSConfig\startupfolder]

To remove the entries, open Registry Editor (Regedit.exe) and navigate to the above paths
