MSCONFIG START UP ITEMS MISSING IN REGISTRY

M

Melissa Brown

Hi -

I want to clean out the start up list in msconfig. I have been told that
these are the places to look to clean out unwanted or old start up items

The programs that are listed for start up in msconfig
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
and
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run

The disabled items are in
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run-
and
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run-

However, I've gone to these locations and not one item in my msconfig start
up list is there. I have a ton of items that need to be deleted that are old
and not used in msconfig start up. I believe this is why my computer loads
slowly when I start it up. But if they are not located in those locations,
where are they located then? Where does MSCONFIG get it's information for
that list in the start up tab?

Any information would help greatly. I've searched the registry and can't
find anything.

Mel

Thanks for the fast reply.

There was one more location that I hadn't looked. I found three more items
that were listed in the start up menu in msonfig that I got rid of. But I
still have a TON of more programs that arn't listed there. I have registry
mechanic and that didn't fix the problem.

Tho I noticed in the start tab in msconfig. it says where it's located in
the registry. It's the same place that I was told to look for in the first
place. But it is not listed there.

I hope someone has an answer on how I can get rid of it. Obviously, windows
is seeing it from somewhere.

Why don't you do a text search in Regedit for the program that is disabled.
This will find you the registry key where it is stored.

Hi Melissa,

Try also this key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Shared Tools\MSConfig\startupreg

Hi Melissa,

Automated Edit:

Clear Disabled Items from Msconfig Startup (Line 148)
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm

Manual Edit:

To Remove Entries:

These values are stored in the Registry. Go to Start/Run/Regedit to access
these keys and values to delete/remove them:

For items that were in the Start menu, Programs, Startup folder:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Shared Tools\MSConfig\startupfolder.
You'll find a subkey for each disabled item.

For items loaded from the Registry:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Shared Tools\MSConfig\startupreg.
Again, you'll find a subkey for each disabled item.

If the item has been disabled (unchecked), then it wasn't removed at
uninstall because it wasn't where the uninstaller expected to find it:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Shared Tools\MSConfig\services

Some startup items may not be in the registry. Here are two other
places to look:

C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs\Startup
C:\Documents and Settings\LoginName\Start Menu\Programs\Startup

Good luck

That is incorrect in XP. In the registry,
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Shared Tools\
MSconfig\startupreg
where each has a subkey you can delete. The ones from Startup or Common
Startup are probably best put back in MSConfig, then delete the
references in All Programs - Startup
