XP Home, SP2, tweaking/ cleaning my start tab in msconfig,

turned off -

unchecked carpserv.exe, iTunes helper.exe, Skype, qttask, and also
discovered in my msconfig start an almost blank line:

A check box that was checked (I unchecked it, however)
under start up item, blank
under command, blank,
under location Sofware\Microsoft\Windows\current version\run

any ideas what this blank start up item is or was?

Perhaps a leftover from something I added/ removed?

Need I worry?

Thank you,
Robert

You're right. It's an orphaned entry, most likely left over from something
that was installed or moved to a different folder. Just delete that that
value with regedit. To be save you might want to export a copy of that key
first.

Msconfig was not intended as a startup program manager but as a
troubleshooting tool, so if you uncheck items from msconfig you should then
remove them from wherever they are loading.

There is a possibility this orphaned entry is left over from the removal of
malware so make sure you have a current AV program with current definitions
and a combination of non viral anti-malware apps run regularly in safe mode.

Thank you both.

However, when you write:
"Msconfig was not intended as a startup program manager but as a
troubleshooting tool, so if you uncheck items from msconfig you should then
remove them from wherever they are loading."

This is where I am at a loss as I am unsure how to remove them.

Suggestions?

I understand about msconfig.

I did the following, found only one item that seemed out of place:

Now run the registry editor and navigate to this location.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Shared Tools\MSConfig

In the left hand column, see if there's a + sign next to the
startupreg subkey.
If so, click on it.
Click on the subkey that's under startupreg.
The information displayed in the right hand pane may provide
some clues as to what program added the problem entry in
msconfig.

The out of place item appears to be Registry Update.

In Startupreg I found:
Carpservervice
ISUSPM
ITunesHelper
Quick Time Task
Registry Update
Skype.

I sent to the iTunes forum a query as to how to adjust settings for iTunes
and Quick Time to take them out of start up altogether, unload them, and
looked in preferences and could not find adjustments for this.

So I have to wait.

For Skype, I unchecked startup Skype when I start Windows, but it still
showed up in msconfig,

for ISUSPM, and carpserv.exe various sites said I could unckeck it but I can
not find out how to unload either.

Thoughts about the apparent orphaned Registry Update item?
Should I delete this line from the registry?

Found this nifty software called AutoRuns from SysInternals that allows
manual adjustments to all start up software.

This way I can leave msconfig alone.

In AutoRuns simply clicked on Logons and was able to manually adjust
everything.

I can disable by unchecking items I do not wish to start up at startup.

As to the orphan, may leave it alone for now.

Thanks to all,
Robert

Two machines I installed NERO-6 on showed up with that blank line item.

I deleted it on both machines and all is well

Please specifically how did you eliminate that line?
It appears as the Registry Update in the registry.

I did this:

Do you think I can just delete this registry item?- Registry Update?

Uncheck it in msconfig then delete the reference to it in the registry in
this key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Shared Tools\MSConfig\startupreg
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Shared Tools\MSConfig\startupfolder

this key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Shared Tools\MSConfig\startupreg
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Shared Tools\MSConfig\startupfolder

I unchecked said item from ...\Msconfig\startupreg,

then went to ...\Msconfig\startupfolder and found only a default file that
would not allow itself to be deleted.

Reboot and all seems well, the orphan is no longer appearing in msconfig
startup, in registry under the ...Msconfig\startupreg.

System appears to be running at optimum.
1.83 Ghz, 512 RAM, 40GB HDD, external 250GB, ...XP Home SP2, Comodo
firewire, Avast Antivirus,

All this because last weekend I reformatted my HDD after 4 years, and felt
it needed a good housekeeping and spring cleaning.

Reinstalled everything last week, and then even uninstalled a few software's
that I temporarily had reinstalled, as I realized they were unnecessary: one
of them could be the source of the orphan.

That being written, Where the orphan came from is anyone's guess.
It is gone.

Your help is greatly appreciated.

Thank you very much,
Robert

Hi Robert, just for gp use, many registry edits require a reboot for the
change to take effect.

Glad that all is well now.
