msconfig - oriental entries in startup

P

Patrick

Windows XP-HE

At System Configuration Utility (msconfig) under the 'Start Up' tab, I have
these two entry

'Start Item' and 'Command' heading = load of oriental characters (all four
~same)
Under 'Location' heading;
HKCU\SOFTWARE\MICROSOFT\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Windows:Run
HKCU\SOFTWARE\MICROSOFT\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Windows:Load

Has anybody got an idea what the locations might refer to?

I have a 2 year old Windows XP setup that has had many programs installed
and uninstalled. All I see in that location of the registry is a load line
and it is completely empty of any data.

Some of the things for DVD players, codecs, copyright protected games and
probably a few other things will add entries with odd characters but not
under Windows NT and not in any of the run/load keys.

What happens if you disable this item in MSCONFIG?

What happens if you remove those two registry keys? (Export before removing
so that you can add them back "just in case.")

Have you scanned the system with an up to date antivirus program?

Thank you 'Sharon F' for replieing,
What I have done since is to untick the things in msconfig, nothing
particular happened.
I then put the ticks back and it complained that it couldn't find the
oriental-files.
So I just removed the ticks again, again no apparent problems (time may
tell).

I run AVG, Ad-Aware, SpywareBlaster, EasyCleaner, RegCleaner, RegScrubXP,
SpybotS&D etc, not a trace of the funny files/names.

I have never messed in the registry (had a look once though), I'll have a
look !
I presume that I back-up with File>Export
Anyway, as I say, I'll have a look.
Thanks again Sharon for your reply.,

You're welcome, Patrick. Sounds like unchecking in MSCONFIG is enough to
keep this thing at bay and its absence isn't causing you any difficulties.
If you're uncomfortable in the registry, just open it and look around.
Since you've disabled the item in MSCONFIG it won't be in that exact
location. Instead it will have moved to the same basic section of the
registry but as a "don't run" type of item.
