Nobody is going to see this CD for at least a week (who hasn't already seen it), probably two to four weeks, even if (or especially if)*everybody* ordered it tonight.

Yes, there will be questions, and I suspect there will be a lot of, er, "comment". But we have time to prepare. Some of us, anyway, ;-)

I'm personally hoping that I can find the time to put out some guidelines for the CD before it actually makes it into circulation, and I'm hoping others with the proper credentials will also do so. There are definitely some things people will want to know and understand *before* running the CD. What it will do, what it won't do, and what are the "gotchas".

That's a HINT, ok? Suggest all safe-hex practitioners look long and hard and ask lots of questions, and read all the blurbs--*before* running this CD.

a new CD?

Hi

I doubt that very much.

I would think that they update this CD with some interval, e.g. based
on x number of new critical security updates are released since last
revision of the CD. I would also think that a release of a new OS
service pack for Windows XP or Windows 2000 will trigger a revision
(the current CD comes with SP1 for WinXP and SP4 for Win2k).

T

Tedd Riggs

My guess ?
If a few SP come out or about every 6-9 months a new CD will be around. I
read that "Future Publishing" was going to be the company that provides the
Security CD. So it sounds like this first one is the Microsoft Version and
later ones will be from Future ?

My order number is (well almost....) 01112004672432, I wonder if the
"01112004" is the date code of the release, but unless alot more people have
ordered this then me, I do not think my order was the 672432th order, or if
it is, someone is very busy making CD's !
Just my 2 cents
Tedd

My guess? This is the first and *last* CD you'll see for any current version of Windows except, perhaps, XP. No previous version, with the possible exception of Win2K is going to be getting additional patching to the extent that making an updated CD available is worth the time and expense. My 2¢.

I'm almost certain that Jan. 11th isn't the date of the release, but hard to say--maybe the 0111th new item of 2004? Maybe 01/11/04 is date of creation for the ordering "paperwork"?

Anyway, mine is 181769 following that, order placed at ~8:40 pm PST.

T

Gary Said
"mine is 181769 "
Maybe the numbering plan is another inverse logic. You ordered yours at 8:40
pm PST and mine was 1:10 pm PST ! I should have a lower number...Unless
maybe the larger numbers mean you get more info on the CD :)

Yeah you might be correct about this as the one and only CD. But they will
have to do something when Win XP SP2 comes out of beta. I guess they could
sell it like they did SP1...

While this statement is [possibly] not true today,
it will be true by the time the CD hits your mailbox.

There is no implied criticism here. Just a simple heads up

Heck, for all I know, they keep their order forms in a used cardboard box and about as well sorted as mine! Or, perhaps, there is a geographical component to the system.

I have no idea about XPSP2 distribution, except to say that it would seem unlikely that any additional, post-SP2 CD would be forthcoming before end of 2005/early 2006.

receive free antivirus and firewall trial software.
This CD is only available for Windows XP, Windows Me, Windows 2000,
Windows 98, and Windows 98 Second Edition (SE).

Thanks Mr. Bear!

A question to the Microsoft insiders - why doesn't Microsoft just publish an
ISO for download so we can just download and burn a copy!

Why do we have to wait for up to 6 weeks and trust the vagaries of snail
mail for relief?

Or perhaps, have both a "free CD" AND the option to burn yer own?

Just curious.

In the Linux world, we have access to multiple sources when considering
upgrades or patches. With the Microsoft solution, we have a single source
of relief which is obviously ponderous and slow.

Users (of all OSS) have been clamoring for such a CD (and extended support
for Win9x) for years and now that MS has heeded their wishes....

How do you expect beta testing to be conducted on updates not yet released?

G

Gary S. Terhune

More like 4 months, but I get your drift. Bear has addressed that issue. Beta-testing takes time. The level of patching that is included has been reasonably well debugged, something that can't be said for more recent patches.

Myself, I find this CD to be useful *if* a full and forced updating is desired (through Oct. '03.) On Win98/98SE/ME systems, it's not a "Detect and Repair" operation--it's a forced installation/reinstallation.

Personally, I'd have preferred a more intelligent "detect and repair" kind of system, updatable with additional catalogs and patches, and with more (*any*) choices. Such systems are available for newer versions of Windows, and while they are too complicated for the average user, I was hoping for something more along those lines than what was produced. This production is MS Idiot-Proofing at its best. (Yes, "best"--it does what it does quite well.)

Well, I may as well order the CD, as it is free. BUT, I do have all the
critical updates from the Windows Update Catalog. Also, I have a full
system backup-- just refreshed!

Time will tell whether they update the CD, when THAT becomes necessary.
However, if you or Bear or any MVP should come by insider information, I
promise not to sue.
