MS Office Word 2003 how to "print to file"

I want to use MS Office Outlook 2003's PRINT TO FILE option. This requires
the PRINT TO FILE option be checkmarked in the PRINT WINDOW. This will give
the file a ".prn" format. Has anyone used this option successfully and been
able to print file later on various printers? I have also wanted to use
this for MS Word documents.

I think that ".prn" formated documents cannot be changed and are able to be
printed at outsourced printers.

Can I ask what your logic is behind this?
Wouldn't it be much simpler to export the document to a pdf file?

No, the PRN file is PRINTER specific. Print to the Document Image writer
if you want to "print the current version" of the document later.
