Moving preferences to a new machine?!?!?!

My IS dept has decided they need to reformat my computer for some reason.
This will be a total wipe and a clean install of all software. I've worked
hard getting my settings for Word/Excel set up and I'd like to not lose them.
Where are the settings and can I copy them back to the machine after the
install?
