Moving emails to a new computer

I recently reinstalled my operating system (after backing up) and am trying
to restore my mail account to a new computer. I have no problem setting up
the POP settings and getting and sending email. The issue is moving the old
emails across to the new computer.

I have managed to get Mail to show me my old directory structure and basic
list of emails, however, when I select or try to open a specific email I get
the message "Message cannot be found".

Any ideas of how to get Mail linked back to my messages? Prior to the
reinstall, I copied the entire "User" section of my HD, so I should have all
of the files - for example, I assume that .pat files are similiar to .pst
files in Outlook?

You need to open Windows Mail, and import the messages from the backup
folder.
You can't just copy them over, because then they won't be in the message
store, and won't be seen by WM.
I don't know what the .pat file is, but WM doesn't store messages like
Outlook. With WM, the messages are in individual .eml files.
