mouse slowdown

I have windows XP Home Edition v. 2002 w/ SP1 w/ 256 MB of Ram on a Dell
laptop. The laptop has a wireless (linksys) hook-up and I am running
Norton Internet Security 2004. Recently, after the computer has been
running for about an hour, the mouse pointer becomes erratic and hesitates.
If I don't reboot, the mouse will just get slower and slower.

Additional info:

I have an internal mouse pointer and an external - both behave the same.
It was fine after I installed the wireless hook-up.
It was fine after I installed Norton, however, it did start happening about
three days later.
I shut off Norton and any other programs that are running at the time, but
it does not solve the problem.
Once I reboot, the mouse is fine for appx. one hour then it just bogs down
again.

Any thoughts?
Thanks

Just curious; How old is the laptop? Any other symptoms besides the mouse?
Have you tried to blow out the vent ports of the laptop case, to clear any
dust to prevent heat build up (That may not have anything to do with this,
but it's a good idea to keep them clear). Being a laptop, even when you're
careful, jarring of the unit can occur, and possibly something internally
needs to be looked into. Doesn't really sound like an OS issue to me,
especially when you have tried the internal and the wireless, and both have
the same issue. I would have said battery in the wireless, but that doesn't
seem to apply here for the same reason (Internal does the same
thing)...*However*...Norton is a resource hog, you may try disabling Norton,
and try some domestic usage (Don't open any mail or surf unprotected with
Norton being shut off)...See if that makes any difference at all. Sorry I
don't have more...Good Luck...

Thank you. The laptop is 6 months old, but now that you bring up the heat
build-up, I'm thinking that may be the problem. I'll look into that

Thanks again!

the heat build up may be the problem

I hope so...I know how frustrating troubleshooting can be. I wish you the
best of luck. (I also re-read your original post again, and you said you
already disabled Norton to experiment)...Sounds like you're on top of
things...Happy 4th.
