Windows stalls - system idle

I recently had a problem with my mouse acting erraticly - see message "mouse
slowdown" posted on 7/2. Now windows takes forever to load (5+ minutes) if
it does load. Sometimes the system will load, but no desktop or taskbar
items will load. When I hit Ctr, Alt, Delete and look at processes - I
notice that the last item "system idle process" is constantly running. Even
when the desktop or taskbar loads, everything is very, very slow and the
system idle process is still constantly running.

My info is I have windows XP Home Edition v. 2002 w/ SP1 w/ 256 MB of Ram on
a 6 month old Dell laptop. The laptop has a wireless (linksys) hook-up and
I am running Norton Internet Security 2004.

I have no viruses. I could not find "scan disk" on the XP.

Any thoughts?

Try using a regular keyboard and a separate mouse, see if you still have the
problem. If not then you have a wireless product or its driver problem, and
not a computer problem. Also, take a look in Event Viewer for any problems
being reported.

Scandisk does not exist in 2K or XP, although something so similar does that
it's usually referred to as Scandisk by most people! Right click the icon
for your drive, select Properties and then the Tools tab and then the Check
Now button and then select which options you want. If you've never does it
before then let it also check for bad sectors (this will take quite a while
for it to do). Good to do, but not likely to be the root cause of your
problem.

Thanks Ricky

I checked the disc, but the computer is getting slower. I did everything in
the Microsoft Help - slow start-up such as shutting everything off in the
msconfig. The computer is still taking at least 5 to 8 minutes to fully
start up and then it runs slow and the mouse hesitates.

Any thoughts?

HiJack This is a program that simply searches for programs that run at
boot time, and checks for browser plug-ins. The results this program
gives you are generally just informative. Most of the programs it will
come up with are valid programs that you actually want running. You'll
have to go through the results and tell the program to delete unwanted
programs. If you can't figure out what some of the programs are, don't
just delete them, research them and/or post them so experts can let
you know what the program does. Just type the program name into google
which gets a decent answer pretty quickly.
