Mouse requires multiple clicks to work

I have a Microsoft wireless mouse and keyboard. The mouse requires multiple
clicks to work. Sometimes as many as 20 or 30 clicks. This is a new problem
that just occurred two weeks ago. Nothing has been added to the computer at
all, no new software or hardware. It has been untouched for many months.

Mice don't last for ever. Each time you click, the
micro-switches open and close (or maybe it is the other way
round?).

It is probably a case of wear and tear. Try a different mouse.

Check the optical lenses. There may be some lint or grime on them.

Also, check the batteries.

Have you tried new batteries in the mouse? They don't last forever,
you know.

Put in new batteries.
Then make sure to use the sync/reset button on mouse and receiver.

If that doesn't help, maybe it's time to retire that old mouse. Most
mice do not have a hinge for the plastic shell used for the "button".
They just let the plastic shell flex. After awhile, and due to loss of
memory in material fatigue, the shell may not flex all the way back up.
This results in it sitting on the switches so the switches may not
"break" their contact. You end slapping the "buttons" a few times
trying to get the switch to break (so it can "make" to show a change in
contact). Switches go bad, too.

What is between the wireless mouse and its transceiver unit?

"Most mice do not have a hinge_______" Who makes such a mouse? Why
'most'????

It was a facetious statement. It was supposed to provoke the reader to
think if they ever saw such a mouse. It provoked you, didn't it? Made
you stop and think, didn't it?

I could have said, "Have you ever seen a mouse with a hinge?" However,
sometimes I prefer subtlety. Often it proves if the reader actually
*read* the material.
