it started a few months ago, i start a game (has happened with multiple
programs, not all games) and the pointer either vanishes or freezes. the
thing is that the mouse is still active. if moved, items on the screen
highlight or react with the mouseover feature but the pointer remains
stationary or gone. exiting the program does nothing the pointer is still
frozen and the mouse still responds if moved. i end up having to reboot.

i have windows xp, an nvidia geforce vcard with latest drivers

Is there a driver for the mouse you are using? If so, try reinstalling
it. Another thing to try is switching it for a known good mouse. That
should at least get you somewhat started.

Mister Evolution54 is a daft fool. This situation is screaming "More
RAM!" Try sticking a higher frequency card on your board, if you have
the expansion space. If not, try reducing the resolution that the
application is operating at. This should, in theory, place less strain
on the your processor and RAM, therefore, allowing the other processes
to perform better.

Well then I guess you can try the other suggested solution and add more
RAM to your system. How much do you already have right now?

That should be enough RAM. Try going over these procedures on this
website to see if it helps at all:

Wow, I thought I was the only one with this problem.

I have XP, Mocrosoft P2/2 mouse and the Nvidia Gforce 6600. This same
problem started about a month ago when I swapped out my old Radeon 9800 pro
for the new Nvidia. Great card as far as I could tell. Could this be a
graphics driver update issue? I'm going to try updating card drivers and the
mouse drivers. Lets see what happens.

what worked for me was reinstalling the video driver that was packaged with
the card. the new drivers on nvidia's site turned out to be uncompatable with
the 6600
