Mouse not responding after XP Pro upgrade

Just received a Dell Dimension 4600 with ATI Radeon 9800
Pro. Bought a copy of XP Pro to uprade XP home that was
installed on the machine when I recieved it. Mouse worked
fine at this point. Windows update detected 45 critical
upgrades the first of which was SP1a express. After Sp1a
express install mouse no longer functions. Have tried
three different mice with same result. How can I determine
and resolve the problem?
