Upgrading Compaq Presario R4000 (Athlon 64) from XP Home to XP Pro

I've bought a Compaq R4000 1gb/80gb with XP Home/SP2 in order to write
apps in .Net 2.0.

Obviously I need to upgrade to XP Pro as a pre-req before I can install
any of the nice .Net 2.0 goodies.

When I try to upgrade from an XP Pro/SP1a DVD it reports that it can't
do an upgrade because the existing OS is more recent, but that I can
install XP Pro by booting from the DVD. I'm reluctant to do a
from-scratch install of XP Pro in case the laptop has custom software.

[1] Can I safely ignore the fact that my laptop is running an Athlon
64, given that any code I write will be running on 32-bit Intels?

[2] Should I be able to do an upgrade (rather than an install) from an
XP Pro/SP2 DVD?

[3] If all else fails, would it be safe to do an install of XP
Pro/SP1a, then apply SP2?

Thanks -

Francis.

Thanks - I took your answer to be a "yes" to questions [1] and [2], so
when I finally found an XP Pro/SP2 DVD from our MSDN library I did the
upgrade and it seems to have run perfectly.

Good, You left out the MSDN part. Would have given a different answer.
