Hi
Need your help, please read message below dotted line below that I posted
yesterday.

I'm going over friends to finish off setting up* tomorrow (Friday) *and have
many critical updates
to download(see below).
One thing I have seen in this group that can be a problem is after
downloading an update and
rebooting it can, sometimes it seems ask you to download the same file
again.

I saw on this group a post about this problem and the cure.......going here
/there/and delete
something which will rebuild it self on another reboot and stop the asking
to download same files again but after looking though posts can't find
it now..

So,can anyone please advise in case I have this problem crop up tomorrow,if
so please
give *all* steps needed as I'm a Windows 95 user and do not know my way
round XP to
well and the friend is a first time computer user.Sorry for long post and
many thanks if you can help
Barry.

Hi (15/10/03)
Can anyone advise please.
I'm a Windows 95 user, but have just set up a new computer for a friend that
has XP home.

Computer came on Monday,up and running with Nortons firewall etc.

Have more to setup yet and going to friends on Friday to finnish setting up.

Had a quick look late last night at XP Windows updates and after update
scanned comp
I think there was approx 100 updates to select from but had no time to look
into.

Q,is there any updates that I should not download that may cause problems
??as I've read on some groups that this or that XP update has caused
probs,,anyone ??.

I would install all the critical updates. Don't download too many at a
time. You can remove those you don't want at the
winupdate site. Download 3 or 4 at a time. Restart after every download
and install of updates.

Hi, Barry.

I would visit MS and download SP1. That should sort out everything up to a
week or so ago. After that, visit again, let the MS scan the PC and it will
let you know what's left in the way of patches/updates. A lot less than your
suffering at present!

Good Luck,

Ed.

Hi Edward and Rich
Many thanks for your replies,as re SP1 is this now SP1a ??.My friends
computer has
only been built in the last in the last two weeks, would SP1///SP1a not have
been already
installed by the manufacture ??.How long since SP1///SP1a was released
please ??.

After reading most posts in this group I am a little worried about some of
these updates
as some seem to be causing all sorts of problems with XP .Almost glad I've
still got Win 95.
Would hate friends new XP computer not to work as results of installing
patches.

Many thanks
Barry

There's a new security roll-up for XP available so you only have to
download one thing. It is a bit over 9MB. Download it and install it.
If you're going to run an MS os, you have to apply the security
patches. 1) Make a restore point before you do; 2) don't have other
programs - especially av - running while you install patches; 3) be
sure to reboot when you're done.
