Hi
Can anyone advise please.
I'm a Windows 95 user but have just set up a new computer for a friend that
has XP home.

Computer came on Monday,up and running with Nortons firewall etc.

Have more to setup yet and going to friends on Friday to finnish setting up.

Had a quick look late last night at XP Windows updates and after update
scanned comp
I think there was approx 100 updates to select from but had no time to look
into.

Q,is there any updates that I should *not* download that may cause problems
??as I've read on some groups that this or that XP update has caused
probs,,anyone ??.

While I'm here anyone know how to enable the nunbers on the lower right of
keyboard
(Logitech chordless).Numbers above querty letters work ok.

Many thanks.

My Logitech Cordless has a key above the "7" called Num Lock. Tap it once to
enable numerals. If you load the Logitech software, you should get an icon
in the Notification Area indicating if Num and Caps are on or off.

Regarding the Updates, you are right to not take them all without question.
First of all, do you have SP-1 on your XP? I would guess that you do. Check:
Start>>Control Panel>>System>>General Tab. It will mention under System
whether you have it.

You should have all Critical Updates, definitely. By the way, be sure your
Firewall is enabled! Go to Help an Support for this. Many folks have gotten
the Blaster/Lovsan virus by going on the Internet for activation, updates,
etc. without their firewall up.

You should download and install your Critical updates first, rebooting and
testing your system a little between updates. It is no fun to find a big
problem after downloading many updates, and not know which one caused the
problem. As far as the other updates, you should understand what you are
downloading, and realize that any update you do not actually need carries
some risk of incompatibility and the resulting hassles. Reboot after
installing any noncritical update, the same as with the Critical Updates.

Hi cimex
Thanks for reply, have tried num lock,no joy

If you load the Logitech software, you
I assume Notification Area = taskbar ?.

As re firewall I installed Nortons Personal firewall and tested at
shields-up prior to setting
up DUN so ok there.

Will check for SP1 and try and pick though the critical updates best I
can,did not know if any in particular updates caused probs and to
avoid,could be long job on dial-up :-( .
Many thanks.

Sorry to hear your Num Lock doesn't work. Did it work on a previous machine?
If it did, you may want go to Logitech for a current, XP-compatible driver
for your model of keyboard.

Some folks solve the problem of endless dial-up downloads by using a machine
with a faster Internet connection to write the Updates to a disk, and then
install them from the disk.

PS: "Notification Area" is the XP term for the "systray" area of the
Taskbar.

I've had a brand new keyboard that didn't work right - I just took it back
and exchanged it.
