Monitor Problems with a Laptop

The monitor on this laptop will not come on at all...and when I hook it up to
a regular 19" external monitor it still won't fucntion properly. The user of
the laptop says it was working fine two days ago and then it went out. I
hoping it is not the video card and it just needs a simple fix. Can anyone
help.

look on the keyboard for a "func" key and one of the "F" keys should switch
to external monitor (eg. FUNC+F12)

If it won't work with either the built in or the external, and you can't
see a "boot screen" or get into the BIOS, I would think the "adapter" died.

I am going to ask a silly question but what adapter are you refering to? If
that is the case then is my best bet to contact gateway to get another
adapter?

Video "adapter", in a laptop it's likely part of the motherboard and not
replaceable by the user. Contacting Gateway as to the repair of the unit
is advisable tho.
