External monitor

Seems very simple - all I want to do is plug in an
external monitor and it appear exactly as my laptop
monitor without any fuss. That's what happens with
Win2000, Win98, Win98SE, but WinXP seems to only talk
about "extending" the desktop, which I don't want to do.
I only want a second identical monitor. Argh.

What's the trick?

Thanks,
gin

Make sure you have the latest drivers for XP from the video card (or
chip) mftr. Usually you set the attributes for the external monitor in
the Display applet in Control Panel - there should be "advanced"
settings for your video device there.

You will have to use ULTRAMON
http://www.realtimesoft.com/ultramon/

I have this program running on my pc all the time, its great!
Look at the last feature of this list:

UltraMon is a utility for multi-monitor systems, designed to increase
productivity and unlock the full potential of multiple monitors.
a.. efficiently move windows and maximize windows across the desktop
b.. manage more applications with the Smart Taskbar
c.. control application positioning with UltraMon Shortcuts
d.. multi-monitor support for desktop wallpapers and screen savers
e.. mirror your main monitor to secondary monitors for a presentation

Hope this helps. Let us know.

May I add, check the latest drivers for your card, some of the drivers offer
mirroring as a feature.
If the driver cant do it you can use ultramon (previous post), download the
trail and test it.

Thanks. Unfortunately, it isn't that XP doesn't see the
external monitor - it's that it will not simply display
the laptop's desktop by default. XP treats the external
laptop as an extension of the laptop's screen and the only
way I can get things to show up on the external monitor is
to "drag" items off the laptop's desktop onto the external
monitor. Which I don't want to do!

I just want to plug in the external monitor and see the
laptop's desktop, as I've always done with previous
Windows versions.

But you see, this isn't an XP issue - this is a driver issue. I know
that XP does exactly what you want because I was at a client's
yesterday and he has a Dell laptop connected to a huge, beautiful Dell
lcd tv monitor and it worked perfectly. The laptop's screen was
mirrored on the big monitor. I went into the Display properties and
there were options for setting the two screens there. So again, find
out 1) what video chipset you've got in your laptop; 2) check for
latest drivers and/or configuration software on the laptop mftr.'s
website; 3) check on the video device mftr.'s website for drivers as a
last resort. You should always look to the laptop mftr. for drivers
first because laptops are proprietary. If you are still having
difficulties, call your laptop mftr.'s tech support.

The trick is: It's not an XP issue. It's a hardware issue. There is some
combination of keys you press to redirect video to the external video port
(some key combinations require six fingers on your left hand - or a cat).

Check your lap-top owner's manual.

The keyword is "Clone". If the video driver has it available you can do
it, if not, you can't.

Wanna trade?
I have the opposite problem. I WANT an extended desktop, and can only
get it to show the same thing on both monitors. (I'm pursuing this
elsewhere, but it does validate everybody's comment that it's a driver
problem, not an XP problem).
