Multiple monitor settings don't "stick"

L

Lonestar

I normally run a second monitor off the display port on
the back of my laptop. My laptop's display is monitor 1
and the second display is monitor 2. Occasionally I have
to give a demonstration using a projector plugged into
the display port, and I will click Fn-F8 to get the video
displayed on the projector properly. After I do this I
cannot get multiple monitors to work properly again.
Every time I log out of my computer the multipe monitor
settings toggle - i.e. if I am using multiple monitors
the computer will load up as single monitor, or if I am
using single monitor the computer will load up as dual
monitor. I've tried changing the settings every possible
way and I can't get the settings to stick. The laptop is
a Dell. Does anyone have any idea what the problem is
and how to fix it?

You refer to logging out of your computer. Have you tried rebooting
after removing the projector and returning the display back to the
Dell's LCD?

Normally, the Fn-F8 setting has to be re-initiated each time you
switch from the LCD to the attached monitor (projector) and vice
versa. Also, since the port is auto sensing, the removal of the
projector prior to switching back to the LCD will probably result in a
black screen. That's why I asked if you're rebooting.

It may be a hardware problem if you can't get it to work right even
after a reboot. Call Dell tech support for assistance.
