Modem suddenly gone

I have an XP laptop with builtin modem and ethernet adapters. I was
installing XP updates recently when suddenly the modem became
non-functional. It appears that the service for the modem is not
starting.

I also have other odd behaviors - such as Norton Antivirus won't run and
msconfig also dies. My suspicion is that the Spybot worm is to blame
here. Does anyone know if this worm is capable of such strangeness?

And, if so, help in ridding myself of this pest would be appreciated.

You are right on the money . Running this good downloading free scan should
find and remove the worm . Jym
