modem keeps trying to dial out??

please can someone help me? my computer , windows xp keeps trying to dial out to the internet via the telephone line ? i have not tried to log on to anything but yet some thing is trying to access the internet and i cannot find out what it is?? please can someone help me?> Thanks craig sacke

Click on "M" at Kelly's link below and scroll to the section that begins
with... "Modem - Auto Dials".

Also click START|RUN and type "msconfig" (no quotes) <enter>.
Click the Start Up tab, and scan the list for a program that might want to
connect to the Net. Programs that want to automatically update, or to
transfer info are suspect.

Check for 'spyware', and remove it, by installing one or more of the
following...

open control panel | Internet Options, click the connections tab.

select your dial-up connection in the list and choose "never dial a
connection".

click ok.

Now the system will only dial-out when you explicity ask it to (by
double-clicking your connection, or by using you AOL or MSN client).
