mode is gone

Hello

I've got windows 2000 Professional SP4

Motherboard: Asus A7N8X Deluxe
Modem: U.S. Robotics 56k win int

My modem was working normally, one day the power went down and system
rebooted. After that I can't dial to the internet. Windows was saying
that it could not communicate with the modem. I tried to reinstall the
modem, but what a surprise. When I removed the modem and did Scan for
hardware changes, Windows found the modem but is requesting some files
for the driver. Before the incident it could install the modem without
asking me. I even reinstalled the service pack.

What might be the problem?
It would be good to avoid reinstalling windows.

Thank You

Have you considered the possibility that the modem may be damaged? Can you
put a different modem in or on your system? Does a different modem work?

Hello

I've solved the problem.

As I said before windows was requesting some files to complete modem
installation.

A little bit history
I must say that this modem sucks hard. First time I bought it I had win2000
sp2
and it could not find the modem. After searching many days I found the
driver for win2000
and modem was working. After some time the modem stopped working and I could
not
install it with the driver previously working. I had win2000 upgraded to sp4
at that time and a friend of mine told me that no other driver is needed and
windows is able to find that modem. He was right.

So now windows is not able to find a modem itself. I pointed to the
directory containing modem driver files that I obtained earlier. Voila modem
is installed and working.

I'm a software developer and honestly I don't understand what's happening.
One day windows can find the modem itself and on the second day it needs
third party files.

I suspect that windows driver storage is corrupted. Could you please tell me
how can I recover it?

Thank You

It seems that this is a WinModem. Winmodems do not have an onboard I/O chip
and rely on Windows for controlling it. With all due respect, I would
suggest to purchase a modem that is not a Winmodem. A non-Winmodem are much
more expensive, but they are reliable, no drivers needed in most cases, and
they don't drain system resources.
