MM won't work after system recovery.

I re-installed windows-XP-Pro-SP2-IE7 and MM opens, but it won't handle any
video files. It won't even re-split clips that I had joined before with MM.
It always worked before. Although, I may have had MM1. I really don't know.
I got some advice in another forum:
1. Click Start > Run...

2. Type regedit and OK.

3. Locate to the following branch:

4. Delete the isinstalled subkey in the right pane.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Active Setup\Installed
Components\{CDD7975E-60F8-41d5-8149-19E51D6F71D0}

5. Open Windows Explorer.

6. Locate to C:\WINDOWS\RegisteredPackages
7. Find the Movie Maker 2 files in the
{60BFF50D-FB2C-4498-A577-C9548C390BB9}
folder and rename this folder as "old-
{60BFF50D-FB2C-4498-A577-C9548C390BB9}".

8. Visit Windows Update Website and reinstall Windows Movie Maker 2
again.

I did the first step, but there was no such entry in the
C:\WINDOWS\RegisteredPackages-{60BFF50D-FB2C-4498-A577-C9548C390BB9}

I wanted to un-install the MM and re-install it. But, I can not find a linkj
to overwrite the present app of MM2.

Wow! That's so far out I'm not even sure how
to respond.

***Proceed at your own risk!***

I'm thinking I would do a system restore to a
time before the registry changes were made.

Uninstall IE7 to roll back to IE6.

Now...download and reinstall WinXP SP2.

Download Windows XP SP2

Generally, users install from the net but this
site allows you to download the complete
file to your hard drive before installing.

It's good for a network administrator because
you can burn it on a CD and install it on as
many computers as you need to.

And it's good for a single machine because
if you ever need to install it again...you'll have
it available without waiting for a download.

Hopefully...at this point...Movie Maker 2.1
will be installed on your machine. If it is...
and if it will open...give it a try and post any
problems here before you try repairing or
replacing anything.

Thanks, John, for the response. Do I allow the Update-site to re-install IE7?

I really don't understand about this "rating the response". Why should I
rate a response, that while it is very informative, the problem has not been
cured yet?

Thanking you in advance for your help!

Oops, I forgot to ask, which method of reverting to IE6 is the "best"? First,
or Second?

Rather than do a Sys-Restore, I used Erunt, a small registry backup app, and
the registry entry, that I had deleted is back in place. Now, on to reverting
from IE7 to IE6. I realize that not everyone is available to reply at my
convenience, so I will use the option 1, assuming that, because it is listed
first, it should be the most appropriate.

At this point...no. Lets see how it goes with IE6.

FWIW...there's a toolkit that will disable the
automatic delivery of IE7.

Who knows? I use OE as my newsgroup

otherwise overlook it.

The first....uninstalling from Add-Remove

I'm thinking system restore was a better choice
because there may have been other changes
to your system also.

If you decide to reinstall SP2...let us know

Thanks so much for being here, John.

I had only uninstalled that one entry, and felt after ERUNT put it back,
that I shgould be OK. I may, or not, find out later.

As far as IE7, I unchecked the box to have it 'hidden'. I looked thru the
updates that are installed. Over 100. I didn't notice SP2, is that a separate
install?

I also did not install 3 of the updates concerning .Net Framework. And did
not install Base-Smart-Card, Media Player 11, Desktop Search, nor the Update
for WMDRM - enabled Media Player. This last one for the media player, I'm not
really sure if I need it, or not.

I went to a link in PCWorld concerning SP2, clicked it and message said that
I already had it installed.

Went to Movie Maker, selected some newer vids and some older, pre-IE7 vids,
but still get the same message,
"could not be imported. Unspecified error" is message I get when I try to
'Import Video'.I wonder what's up?????

G

OK, here's a goodie. I reopened MM, after error message and in the Collection
area, was the vids, that I had gotten the error message. I clicked on one, it
showed and played in the preview pane, but when I right-clicked the vid, it
would not get in the storybook.

Also, tried copy\paste, didn't work. Tried closing it twice, one time
selected to save my work, and the other to not, save the work. Neither made
any difference.

Also, resetting defaults, in tools/general, did not make any difference.

Each, and every time I try to "import", same deal.

Too many messages...too little success.

It's not clear about IE7...were you able to
uninstall it?

Do you have Movie Maker 2.1? Open
Movie Maker...go to Help / About and
have a look.

Did you try reinstalling SP2?

Yes, I now have IE6.

Yes, I have MM version 2.1.40260

Yes, as I stated earlier, I went to a download site, and after clicked to
install, I got the message that I already had SP2.

Sorry for all the messages, BUT I felt you should have all the info, and
what I had tried to do. I didn't want to leave anything out.

If it would be easier, you could e-mail me at (e-mail address removed)

No...I do not wish to e-mail you privately.

FWIW...Posting your e-mail address in a
newsgroup is an excellent way to get spam.
There are bots constantly trolling for new
addresses.

Ok...initially I thought there was some doubt
as to which version of Movie Maker you were
running.

===
The following steps previously offered by
Carlos, MCSE are supposed to reinstall
MM2.1.

1. Go to C:\Windows\inf
2. Right click on Moviemk.inf and click on Install
3. When it asks for your Windows XP cd put
it in and browse to the I386 folder. Click OK
===

Good luck...I've told you all I know.

Thanks so much for the info and for your time. My problem must be unique, but
I hope this info takes care of it.

I looked in here for N "edit" button, but I guess one can not edit entering
an e-mai without thinking.
Thanks again, John
PS:I'll post back if it works.

I found 2 files in the inf area, 1 was moviemk and 2nd was moviemk.PNF. The
moviemk was a setup file with the option to install. I chose this one, as the
other, moviemk.PNF had no such option. I did as directed, and after all
activity stopped, I waited for some kind of confirmation, but none came.

I tried MM and it still was exactly the same. Files start to import, my pc's
activity light was active, then the error message would come up again.
Nothing showed in collections, at that time.

I closed MM, reopened it and all the files were in the Collections pane,
but, while they would play in the preview pane, they could not be inserted in
the storybook.

Is there some direction to point me to???

You took the correct steps. Running moviemk.inf
was apparently not the fix.

Sorry...but I'm done, I think you have system
issues that are deeper than Movie Maker.

Can't help wondering if my original suggestions
would have made a difference but you chose
to ignore 2 of them. And...chances are...it wouldn't
have helped anyway.

Good luck.

As far as ignoring your 2 suggestions, you have to remember that I had just
done a full-system recovery, had SP2, added ALL of the updates, installed all
of my apps, including Movie Maker2.1 and, then is when my problems with MM
started.

Don't take me wrong, I'm sincerely appreciative of your trying to assist. I
had run Secunia's test for apps and all was well. Except, as it turned out,
for the MMM.

Oh well. That's life. Maybe I'll look for a cheap program that does the same
thing.
If I'm lucky.

Thanks again, John, for your help.

John, you may, or may not believe this, but MM is working OK this AM.

The only change, other than with your help, was to remove 2 apps that didn't
run during the night, when they were supposed to. Because of reverting to
IE6, I figured I should re-install them. I did, they work fine, and MM is up
and running.

It may be a coincidence, but I'm not going to second guess it. The 2 apps
were, SpySweeper and AVG.

I'll keep my fingers crossed that everything keeps working.

Thanks again for you help. It may have turned out that your changes, just
took a little extra time.
