Missing or wrong icons

Recently I began noticing missing or wrong icons for files and folders.
Please note that icons vary depending on where the files or
folders are located. For example if one is on desktop the icon is normal
but when it is placed on start up area the icon is turned out to be
wrong one.
How can I restore the original default icons?

Delete the icon cache by erasing the (hidden) file C:\DOCUMENTS AND
SETTINGS\{username}\LOCAL SETTINGS\APPLICATION DATA\ICONCACHE.DB

I could not find ICONCACHE.DB and realized that I posted my question at
a wrong place because my OS is Windows 2000. But if you know the
solution, please post it.

I am experiencing the same problem and i was wondering if anyone can help me.
I have lost nearly all of the icons on my desktop and i have no idea how to
retrive them. If their is anyone out there who can help me please do. Thanks

Then it is "iconshellcache", hidden system, I forget the directory but
thinking System32. But "Find/search" will find it.

Sounds like you still have "Clean Desktop" turned on. (Display
properties, Desktop, Customize desktop) Look in the folder on the
desktop for your "missing items", drag them out and put them back. .

It's not a good idea to hijack someone else's thread. Create a new one
of your own and give specifics about the system and it's configuration,
the problem, when the problem started, what changes were made between
when it worked and didn't work, and what you have tried to fix it.

Without knowing more about your problem try this. Right click a blank
area of the desktop, choose Arrange Icons by. Make sure there is a
check mark on Show desktop icons.

If that doesn't do it start a new message thread giving a detailed
description of the problem and what icons are missing along with the
other information above.

I ran a search for iconshellcache but there was no hit. Hidden files
are set visible. Is the file name correct?

ICONCACHE.DB is a Hidden file.

ICONCACHE.DB should be in both of these...

C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Local Settings\Application Data

%homepath%\Local Settings\Application Data

After deleting ICONCACHE.DB, it will be automatically recreated.

Thanks for your response. As I subsequently posted this file is not
applicable to my OS since it is not WXP. Anyway I will save your post in
case similar problem happens with WXP in the future.

Bob had the file name wrong. ShellIconCache no extension. He was close.

for the file and misremembered.

You're welcome glad it's fixed. Also I blew the file name, sorry,
"shelliconcache" is the correct wording.
