icons disappeared on shortcut keys

The icons on some but not all desktop shortcut keys are no longer displayed.
When I right click and go to "Change Icon" the icon is listed but there is an
asterik next to it.

Some of the icons have reappeared but I am still missing them from the
shortcuts to launch IE, Excel, Powepoint, Publisher, and Adobe Acrobat.
Icons for shortcuts to some Word files and EI sites are also missing.

This happened after technical support people here remotely accessed my
computer, if that is any help.
 
You could try,

Display Properties, Appearance, Advanced, Item, Icon, and adjust the
size by one, Apply, and then change the size back.
