Windows XP shortcut keys (to desktop icons) do not work any more

On several of my desktop icons, I have selected shotcut keys.
I could for example press CTRL-ALT-L to load a specific program.
I set them by right clicking the icon and then selecting properties.
They used to work, but they no longer do, even though right clicking on
the properties of the ICON still shows the shotcut key selected. Is
there any registry switch or other common problem that could cause
this? Thanks

It's best to create your short cuts in the Programs area from the
start button; Short cuts seem to quit if created on the desktop.

In the programs area right click on the icon and set them up as
normal.

Seeing as you already have short cuts assign'd even tho they don't
work, you can't use the same ones in the programs area.
