Lost my icons

Yesterday something really weird happened to the icons on my desktop and left
hand side of the Start menu. All of these icons changed to the white
document-like thing.

I restarted my computer. This restored all but 3 of my desktop icons. I
observed that these 3 shortcuts were also in the most commonly used section
of the Start menu.

After some trial and error I was able to restore the icons on the desktop,
the most commonly used and some 'pinned' shortcuts of the start menu back to
their original icon.

My problem is this: despite unpinning and repinning a shortcut, the shortcut
to Character Map doesn't change, and the icons for Internet Explorer 7 and
Windows Live Mail are still that white document thing.

Why did this happen, and how can I fix it?

Thanks in advance for any help.

Use System Restore.

I tried using System Restore. I used a restore point of the day before, which
failed. I then tried a restore point about 5 days ago and that too failed.

I also tried scanning my computer with Symantec and Ad-Aware. Neither found
anything.

OK
Try installing TweakUI XP from Microsoft
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/downloads/powertoys/xppowertoys.mspx
You need to have XP SP1 or later for this.
Install it & go to the bottom of the lh column to 'repair' and select
'rebuild icons'.
Mike.
