Missing or corrupted file

XP home edition, would not boot due to a missing or
corrupted file, Dell Dimension 4400. During re-
installation , per Dell Tech support, doing a repair
operation, received the following fatal error, causing the
repair operation to fail.

GLOBALROOT\DEVICE\CDROM0\I386 is missing. The re-install
CD was in the CDROM Drive.

I found this error msg: The GLOBALROOT\DEVICE\CDROM0\I386
\NT5INF.CAT catalog file could not be found.
The error code is 1. in a Microsoft Article (Q222852)
which refers to Windows 2000, but not XP, which points to
a CD ROM problem. DELL Tech support could not Fix the
problem, so we had to install a new hard drive with
Windows XP clean installed, and kept the old drive (E:)
with all data files and operating system on it.

WHAT SHOULD WE HAVE DONE?? ANY HELP WOULD BE DEFINITELY
APPRECIATED.

You are prompted for the 'Asms' file when installing Windows XP?
