Using an External USB CD-ROM Drive to Install Windows

Hi all,

I have a laptop computer which has an unreliable CD-ROM drive. I am in the
middle of reinstalling Windows using an external USB CD-ROM drive. I used
the Windows Setup Disks
(http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;310994#XSLTH3135121122120121120120)
to get setup started using the external drive. However, after the first
reboot, and on the screen where it’s got 5 radio buttons, and the “Setup will
complete in approximately 39 minutesâ€, it immediately pops a message saying
“The file ‘asms’ on Windows XP Professional CD_ROM is needed.†The default
path it gives me is GLOBALROOT\DEVICE\CDROM0\I386. However, I can’t get
past this. Can anyone help? How I can get setup to complete using the
external CD-ROM drive?

Thanks,
Nick

Copy the contents of the CD to the hard disk, and run setup from there.
