Reinstall xp with usb external cd-rom?

I have only a USB external CD-ROM drive (my internal died and can't be
fixed because of problem with motherboard attachment). How can I
reinstall XP? Is there a way to add a line to the boot discs along with
the usb drivers to recognize the external drive?

Unless your motherboard permits setting an external USB
CD-ROM to a bootable device, you'll have to replace your
damaged motherboard.

Buy add-on PCI disk controller and connnect your IDE CD to it.

If this isn't possible,
1. Copy the XP CD to your hard disk.
For this, get a DOS boot disk with USB CD support ( bootdisk.com ?)
or temporary move your hard disk to other PC with working CD.

2. On other PC, make XP boot floppies. Start setup from boot floppies,
then continue from hard disk.
