Missing Network Computers

L

Leo Alls

Problem: I have a Windows 2000 Domain that has 2 DCs, 2 DNS servers and 2
Wins servers. I am having problems seeing all the computers in our domain.
If I go into My Network Places in Windows Explorer and then navigate to my
domain I only get a listing of about 100 of the 230 computers. However if I
go to a command prompt I can ping the other machines or if I am in Windows
Explorer and I type in the \\machine name I can then see that one computer
as long as the Explorer window is open. If I go to the DNS and Wins Servers
the machines are there. I really need to be able to see all my systems
because I cannot use the Symantec Corporate Edition to push the client
software down to all my machines if I can't see them.

Questions:
1. Does Explorer have a Max number of computers that it will browse for.
2. If so, what can I do to fix this, if anything?

Most likely either your pdce is multihomed, or one of more of your segment
master browsers are. Like from the pdc you can see everything but a client
browse list request will only be for one segment, and the segment mb/s will
do pretty much the same thing as since they will only have one session at a
time to the pdc, the boxes on the segment for that nic get reported but the
others don't. Look at the following to help, but you can set the
isdomainmaster setting on a "single homed" machine to yes and it should take
over the browsing for that segment (the pdc will Always be the domain master
browser, and that reg value is misleading as it really means "segment"
master browser)
