Midi files: no sound

I'm using Windows Media Player 9 on my Dell Dimension
2400 running Windows XP. I can play, rip, and burn CDs
quite well. However, when I try to play a .mid file,
there's no sound! The file loads. I see the green time
thing moving, as though it's playing. There is no
error. However, there is no sound!

Any ideas how to fix this? I've gone into Tools /
Options / File Types tab and selected MIDI file (midi).
I've tried unselecting and reselecting. Still no sound
for midi files. Again, other music plays just fine.

I have other music software on my computer (Roxio,
MusicMatch, RealAudio...) WMP is set as my default.
Could something be funky because of the other programs???

All ideas welecom!

thanks,
joseph

go to your control panel....click on sounds and audio properties...click on
the volume tab....click on advanced in the device volume area...you should
now have the Play Control window...where it says Midi Synth make sure the
mute button is not checked and the slider is near the top...close window and
test.
If you still have no Midi sound then...go to your control panel
again...click on sounds and audio properties....click on the audio tab....go
down to Midi music playback ...and make sure you have a device selected (
Microsoft GS Wavetable Sw Synth should be listed as it is XP's default
device)...you might have another Synth
there if you have a higher end sound card.
