mid file type not recognized in download (only)

MP9 (in XP pro) recognizes and plays midi files from my hard disk but not
those streamed from the web. The filetype association for .mid is indeed
Media Player and MIDI is ticked in the Media Player internal settings. What
gives?

Updating my earlier plea for help... SOME midi file downloads play (in Media
Player), some don't. Looking at the urls for the files being streamed, all
have the same .mid file extension. I still don't get it. (Naturally, the
source sites don't have any suggestion in their meager help / instructions
that one might encounter such a hurdle.
