Weird File Types problem...?

Howdy,

I downloaded, and played, a MIDI file.

But it played in QuickTime, and my preference was that it
play using VLC Media Player.

No problem (I thought) so I checked in File Types only to
find that files with the MID extension, such as the one I
downloaded, were assigned to VLC.

Next, I looked at the setup of QuickTime (because I know
that there can be conflicting assignments that can produce
odd results, but I found that MID files were NOT assigned to
QuickTime at all...

Sooooooo, where else should I be looking to get these files
to play with VLC?

Many thanks,

Hi Andrew,

No, VLC is a media player from an outfit called Video Lan.
It is unrelated to Vista...

That said, I have checked in WMP, and MIDI files are NOT
checked.

Thanks for any further thoughts,

Right click on the MIDI file and choose "Open With" > "Choose program...",
in the box that opens, choose VLC and check the box that says, "Always use
this program to open these files".

Hi Louis,

Experimenting with this further, I found that the *.MID
files open as I would like if I save them first.

If, instead, I click to "Open" them while still on the web
page, they play in QuickTime.

Thanks for your help,

That would suggest that it is the MIME type, not the file extension, that
determines the application associated with the file when accessed via a web
browser. Is this configurable within Quicktime options/preferences? (I don't
use it myself.)
